What is actually happening
Puppy coat is single-layered, fine and soft. A brush glides through it and the owner reasonably concludes the dog is easy.
The adult coat comes in underneath. Depending on how much poodle is in the mix it is curlier, coarser and much denser, and for a period of months the dog is carrying both at once. That transition layer is where matting begins, because two coat types of different textures wound together is exactly what a mat is.
The timing varies. Eight months is the average and the range runs from six to twelve. First-generation doodles with heavier poodle coats tend to arrive earlier and harder.
The coat types, and how each behaves

The transitional row is the one that catches people. It is temporary, and it is the period with the highest risk of a shave-down.
How to brush a doodle properly
This is the part that changes outcomes more than any product does.
Line brush. Part the coat with one hand, brush the exposed line from the skin outward, then move up a inch and repeat. Working across the top of the coat leaves everything underneath untouched.
Use a slicker first, then a metal comb. The slicker does the work. The comb is the test.
If the comb will not pass to the skin, you have a mat, regardless of how the coat looks.
Do the friction points every session. Behind the ears, armpits, between the back legs, under the collar and harness. Matting starts there every time.
Brush while drying, not after. A curly coat air-dried without brushing sets into mats as it dries.
Which cut holds longest
Shorter holds longer, which is the trade nobody enjoys.
Teddy bear, one to two inches, is the common request. It looks like the photos and it needs brushing every other day.
Puppy cut, half an inch to an inch, holds about six weeks with reasonable brushing.
Summer cut, under half an inch, holds longest and looks least like a doodle.
Shave-down is the outcome, not a style. It grows back. If you want the long teddy bear look, the honest deal is daily brushing to the skin plus a groom every six weeks. If that is not realistic, a shorter cut is not a compromise, it is the correct choice for the life you actually have.

The eight week rule
Six to eight weeks for a doodle, and the transitional period from eight to fourteen months should sit at the six week end.
The reason to book the next one before leaving is arithmetic. A doodle coat grows roughly half an inch a month. At ten weeks the coat has outgrown the brushing routine that was working at six, and by twelve the mats are at the skin. Almost every shave-down we do is a gap that quietly got away from someone who was doing everything else right.
