Key takeaways

  • A full groom should include the nails, ears, teeth and bath, and a quote that looks low usually has add-on pricing behind it. Our full grooms start at $135.

  • Mobile grooming and salon grooming suit different dogs. Mobile is one dog at a time with no crate and no waiting; a salon is cheaper per groom and better for dogs that are genuinely fine in a busy room.

  • The single most useful question to ask any groomer is what happens if your dog is matted, because the honest answer is the same everywhere and the dishonest answers vary. The best dog groomer in Charlotte is the one whose handling matches your dog. For an anxious, senior or reactive dog that usually means a mobile groomer working one on one; for a confident dog with an easy coat a good salon is often the better value. The criteria below are how to tell them apart before you book.

What a full groom should actually include

The word "groom" covers very different things at different prices, which is why comparing quotes is hard. A full groom should include all of this, with nothing on the list priced as an extra:

  • Bath and blow dry

  • A breed-appropriate haircut

  • Nail trim

  • Ear cleaning

  • Anal gland expression if the dog needs it

  • Teeth brushing If a quote sounds cheap, this list is where the difference usually hides. Nails and ears priced as extras can turn a groom that looked like a bargain into an ordinary one.

Our full grooms start at $135, a bath and blow dry starts at $90, and a nail trim on its own starts at $35. Ear cleaning, nails and teeth brushing come with both the groom and the bath.

Neither is better in the abstract. The question is whether your dog finds a busy room stressful. If it does, the crate time is the part that matters more than the haircut.

Five red flags

  1. No answer on matting policy. Ask directly what they do with a badly matted coat. The correct answer is that past a certain point it has to be cut short, because dematting a tight coat is hours of pulling on skin. A groomer who promises to save any coat is either going to hurt your dog or hand you a surprise.

  2. Vague pricing. A groomer who will not quote a range by size and coat before seeing the dog is leaving room to move.

  3. No mention of handling anxious dogs. Every groomer meets them. One who has never thought about it has not been paying attention.

  4. Heavy restraint as a first resort. Grooming loops are normal. A dog held down is not.

  5. No photos of dogs like yours. Doodle coats, double coats and terrier coats all cut differently. Ask to see their work on your breed.

How to book well, in five steps

  1. Decide mobile or salon first, using the table above. That narrows the list more than reviews do.

  2. Ask for a quote by weight and coat, not by breed. A matted cockapoo and a brushed one are different jobs.

  3. Ask the matting question and listen for a straight answer.

  4. Book the first appointment shorter than you think you need. A bath and tidy is a better introduction for a nervous dog than a full groom.

  5. Book the next one before you leave. Every six to eight weeks for a doodle or a double coat. The single biggest cause of a shave-down is a gap that got away from someone.

What we do in Charlotte

We are a mobile groomer, so the van comes to your driveway and your dog is the only dog in it. No crate before, no crate after, no waiting room. Start to finish is usually an hour to two hours depending on coat, and you are home the whole time.

We groom across Charlotte, Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson and Mooresville, including the Myers Park, Dilworth, Elizabeth and SouthPark neighborhoods. Every full groom includes the nails, the ears and the bath. For a closer look, here is what a mobile groom in Charlotte looks like and how it works in SouthPark.

If your dog needs more than grooming, we also run dog training in Charlotte and pack walking in Charlotte, which is leashed structured group walking with five to eight temperament-matched dogs and the same certified Pack Leader each week.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best dog groomers in Charlotte, NC?

The best groomer for your dog depends on how your dog handles a busy room. Mobile groomers suit anxious, senior and reactive dogs because there is no crate time and no other dogs present. Salons suit confident dogs and cost less per groom. Check pricing transparency, matting policy and photos of your breed before booking either.

How much does dog grooming cost in Charlotte?

It varies by groomer and by your dog's weight and coat. Our full grooms start at $135, a bath and blow dry starts at $90, and a nail trim on its own starts at $35.

Is a mobile groomer cheaper than a salon?

No, usually a little more per groom. What you are paying for is one on one handling and no crate time, which is worth it for some dogs and unnecessary for others.

How often should a dog be groomed in Charlotte?

Every six to eight weeks for doodles, poodles and double coats. Every eight to twelve for short coats. Summer humidity here shortens the gap for thick coats rather than lengthening it.

What are the red flags for dog grooming?

No clear matting policy, no pricing until the dog is on the table, no experience with anxious dogs, heavy restraint, and no photos of your breed.
